Boy Scout Aquatic Badges - 101301

BOY SCOUT - SWIMMING MERIT BADGE
Swimming is a leisure activity, a competitive sport, and a basic survival skill. Boy Scouts seeking to earn this badge will learn about safety when swimming and diving, how swimming can contribute to overall fitness and health, and game some basic competitive swimming skills. Participants must have completed the American Red Cross Level Four Swim or be able to swim 100 yards demonstrating (in good form) the front crawl, elementary backstroke and back crawl. This course will follow the 2015 skill requirements and is designed for Scouts seeking to earn the entire merit badge so plan to attend all 4 sessions.

BOY SCOUT - LIFESAVING MERIT BADGE
The main purpose of the Boy Scout Lifesaving merit badge is to prepare Scouts to assist those involved in water accidents, teaching them basic knowledge of rescue techniques, the skills to perform them, and the judgment to know when and how to act so they can be prepared for emergencies. Participants must have completed at least the American Red Cross Level Five Swim or be able to swim (in good form) 400 yards continuously, showing at least 50 yards each of front crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke and retrieve a 10-pound weight from the bottom of 8 to 10 feet of water using a feet first and head first surface dive . This course is designed for Scouts seeking to earn the entire merit badge so plan to attend all 4 sessions.

This program won the Wisconsin Park and Recreation Association Recreation Section's Silver Star Award in 1999!

Swim & Stay Fit Challenge - 101501

Mike Seavert, Instructor

Jump in and get in shape with our Swim and Stay Fit Challenge! The benefit is swimming regularly for fitness. The challenges are can you swim 10 miles in the season or can you beat the mileage of our instructor? Meet at the pool weekly with others who have the same goal as you. Program fee includes your admission to the pool PLUS as a bonus, you can attend the Lap Swim and Open Swim times at the Greenfield and Whitnall High Pool during the same season at no additional charge. All laps must be completed at either Whitnall or Greenfield High Pools during Parks & Rec Lessons, Lap Swim or Open Swim hours. This program includes no formal instruction, participants must have sufficient swim skills to complete laps without assistance. Our instructor will check you in, keep track of the distances you swim and be in the water swimming his laps too.

Swimming provides an excellent cardiovascular and muscle-strengthening exercise, allowing you to work vigorously without placing stress on your bones and joints. This is not an organized program rather, participants set their own pace swimming using the lap lanes. Please observe the typical rules for lap lane courtesy which include:

1) Come to the pool expecting to circle swim – staying to the right and switching sides as you make your turn. Gauge the speed of the lane before entering.
2) Lanes are first come, first served. When joining a lane, slowly enter the water and wait on the side one lap so the swimmers will notice you are joining them.
3) Treat other swimmers with the same courtesy and respect you expect.
4) Check in with the Lifeguard before entering the water.

There are three ways to participate in our lap swim program:
1) Sign up for our Swim and Stay Fit challenge which then gives you admission to Lap Swim and Open swim hours during the season you are enrolled.
2) Drop in and pay the daily fee each pool visit.
3) Become a member of the Greenfield School District’s Fitness Center (please contact the School District directly or see their website for details).

Daily Admission rate: $3 per person/ day (please bring exact change, swim staff have limited money for making change on deck)
